Brighter tommorow with Li-Fi
The Internet is simultaneously a provider of knowledge, self-sufficienсe, and confidence. In this way, it is an additional level of freedom for contemporary people, isn’t it?
Regular customers, global and local enterprises, governmental institutions use opportunities which are given by the network with growing frequency since the Internet has become affordable for everyone. It has made the Internet of Things develop more intensively and, in turn, caused the overloading of the network.
Why should we look for more solutions if the great tool already exists and calls Wi-Fi?

LED-lamps are used everywhere, but before the year 2011 when Harold Haas had presented a new vision, they were used only for illuminating. The new approach was based on data transmission with the help of Visible Light (Visible Light Communication – VLC) in contrast to radio waves used by Wi-Fi.
For the light to be able to transmit data, it is necessary to integrate microchips in each light source.
The main components of Li-Fi system are:
- Light Emitting Diodes (LED) used as a source of data transferring
When the indicator is turned on, the photodetector registers 1, when off – 0. Sequentially turn on and off (flickering invisible to the human eye), the led generates a digital chain.
- A silicon photodiode (photo detector) that responds to visible light and is the receiver of the transmitted data.
Wi-Fi vs Li-Fi
While Wi-Fi requires more resources both for transmission of radio waves and for cooling stations, LED lamps use much less energy.
Systems of radio communication should not be used in the places where radio waves can interfere with pieces of equipment and lead to malfunctioning. In contrast, light is available everywhere and doesn’t influence devices.
The amount of transferred data increases and radio waves cannot deal with it properly. A bandwidth of the light is bigger in contrast to Wi-Fi that makes Li-Fi more appropriate for working with huge sets of data.
Radio waves can get through the walls and it makes easier for an attacker to intercept it. In turn, only those devices which are in a direct access from Li-Fi source can be connected to it that ensures more security.
The rule „no proper light – no internet connection” along with limitations to using it outside should not be classified neither as an advantage nor as a disadvantage. They are merely the factors which reduce the spheres of using by those where Li-Fi can be the most helpful and effective.
As Li-Fi does not lead to interference, provides safety of transferring of information and gives an opportunity to work with massive sets of Big Data, the technology will find an implementation within:
- Board air crafts
- Petrol stations
- Petrochemical plants
- Hospitals and cliniсs
